THIRST FOR MORE
SOAKING THE YULE LOG IS NOT ONLY READING FILLED WITH FASCINATING LAYERS OF HISTORY, IT ALSO EMBRACES THE VERY CORE OF EVERY FAMILY'S TRIUMPHS, FEARS AND DREAMS. KATIE BROWN BENNETT DELIVERS A MOVING STORY OF HER ANCESTORS' THRIVING WILL TO NOT ONLY SURVIVE, BUT TO LIVE FULLY DURING TIMES OF SLAVERY, WAR, STRUGGLE AND FREEDOM. THE VERY ESSENCE OF HER TEXT IS ONE OF RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCEPTANCE, NOT BLAME AND DENIAL. THIS STORY FOCUSES ON THE TRIUMPHS, THE COURAGE, THE DETERMINATION, THE FAITH. AND MOST IMPORTANT, IT GLORIFIES THE EXPERIENCES CREATED BY HER ANCESTORS INSTEAD OF THOSE EXPERIENCES CREATED AGAINST HER PEOPLE. HOW REFRESHING TO EXPLORE THE POSITIVE DRIVE OF A FAMILY FOR ITS DREAMS AND RIGHTS IN A PERIOD OF TIME SO REHASHED FOR ITS OPPRESSION. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS WELL DOCUMENTED GIFT OF STORY. IT IS EDUCATIONAL, BALANCED AND FLAVORED WITH CHARACTER.

excellent research, a well developed story of her family his
I read this book in a single afternoon. I didn't think the book would be entertaining but was pleasantly surprised when I found myself at the end. I want to do this for my children. Ms. Bennett's family must be extreamly proud of her.

William Faulkner : Novels 1930-1935 : As I Lay Dying, Sanctuary, Light in August, Pylon (Library of America)
Published in Hardcover by Library of America (December, 1985)
Authors: William Faulkner, Joseph Blotner, and Noel Polk
Average review score:

Some of the best from one of the South's best writers ...
Faulkner is, without a doubt, one of the South's best writers, and re-reading this collection of novels after many years affirms that belief for me. He was a master of words and I wish we had more Faulkner novels to feast on. Almost no one can measure up to him!

A superb collation and an outstanding value
There is nothing quantitative in this volume that you can't get in other editions of Faulkner's work; however, the Library of America copy is to be strongly commended for the clarity of its typeface, its sturdy cloth-bound hardcover, and its designed ability to *lie flat* at each page. The only fault I could find with this volume is that it would be nice to have _The Sound and the Fury_ included in a Library of America edition as well (currently, the Modern Library edition is the best that can be done). I strongly recommend this edition to the serious reader who, familiar with Faulkner, is looking for a reference copy of these works that will not deteriorate over time (did I mention acid-free paper and a cloth bookmark?). Considering the price of each of these titles in paperback, this volume's value to the casual reader speaks for itself; you, too, are advised to invest in this worthy tome.

My Mother is a Fish
There are many great books, but I have read only two perfect ones, "As I Lay Dying" by Faulkner and Shakespeare's "King Lear." Lear's "howl" after Cordelia's death is (I think) the high point of English literature and Vardeman's internal dialoge (and chapter heading "My Mother is a Fish") is the purest form of writing expression and the high-water mark of American Literature. If you like to read, there are so many subtle threads that run through "As I Lay Dying." You'll recognize Chaucer, T.S.Eliot, and I think Shakespeare's "Lear." Like Gorky, Faulkner uses common people to expound upon universal themes like betrayal and unrequited love, but he does it better, and looks at it harder, than anyone has before or since.

Fancy Feet (The New Kids at Polk Street School)
Published in Audio Cassette by Listening Library (June, 1988)
Author: Patricia Reilly Giff

Very Cute!
I read this when the series first came out. I think it's for younger kids than the original Polk St. series was intended for, and the author is wonderful (I have written to her when I was little and have several hand-written letters from her!) she's a sweet, talented and creative "lady next door"!
I think I like the original Polk St. books better, perhaps because I was always a little older than the intended age group (I was 9 and 1/2 when I first started reading the original books; I read them even if they were for younger kids beacuse they were interesting, enjoyable, and I wanted to become a teacher/author too.)
These books about Stacie made me giggle, they were so cute. I couldn't stand her classmate Twana; she was obnoxious. I felt like slapping that big mouthed brat silly for being mean to Stacie! Shame on you, Twana!

fancy feet review
I thought this book was pretty good. I liked how Stacey's kindergarten class was having a store. I thought that it was a good idea. It was cute when Stacey snooped in Mrs. Zachary's desk and found the fake money to spend at the store. Mrs. Zachary is Stacey's teacher. I liked when kids brought in stuff for the store such as teddy bears, banks, books, and other things. I reccomend this book.

Haitian Vodou Flags (Folk Art and Artists Series)
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Mississippi (Trd) (January, 1998)
Author: Patrick Arthur Polk
Average review score:

Gorgeous and thoughtful
If you're interested in the art, religion, or culture of Haiti, this book is fabulous! It shows clear links between Catholic and Vodou imagery and themes, and the art is inspiring. The color photos are rich & wonderful, and consistent enough to provide a clear understanding of Haitian and Vodou artistic/spiritual traditions. In this case, a picture (or pictures in this book anyway) are worth more than 1000 words. If you're interested in Vodou and/or folk arts of the Caribbean, this book is a worthwhile purchase.

Haitian Vodou review
This book displays the wonderful art and tradition of Haitian sequined prayer flags. The layout of the book with it's full color reproductions is very well done. The text of the book beautifully describes the history and aspects of vodou religeon, in a way that speaks to all people who are touched by art and culture. I highly recomend this book especially to those interested in folk art and Haitian culture.

I Bought It at Polk Bros: The Story of an American Retailing Phenomenon
Published in Hardcover by Bonus Books (December, 1996)
Author: Ann Paden
Average review score:

Buying a Television Set, a Family Affair
This wonderful book captures the memories and spirit of the Polk Brothers retail establishment. Long before Circuit City and Best Buy, Polk Brothers sold hard goods (TV's, Radios, etc) to the families of Chicagoland. It was quite the event for my father to pile the family into the stationwagon to go to Polk City and purchase a counsole Zenith television for several hundred dollars. As a child I remember receiving a toy premium after a purchase. We received inflatable airplanes, 7-UP, and Ann Landers books. Our family home was furnished by Polk City. Polk City was a warm, chaotic, intoxicating place to make a purchase. The book reflects this and brings Polk Brothers alive. The author paints a warm, interesting story of a Chicago institution and captures the family event of what it was to go to Polk Brothers. A real connection to Chicago and its families. A nice read even if you are not from Chicago.

A good history of a successful business.
This story tells the story of the Polks (which was not the original name), who were a family that came to the USA from Europe with big dreams and hopes. These dreams were fulfilled when Polk Bros., the first retailer of its kind became successfull. Polk Bros. set the tone for all future retailers with its new ideas. My favorite part of the book, was reading about the many big and weird promotions Polk Bros. had, including renting out the Chicago Stadium for a humungous b-day celebration. Read this book (of course) to find out more.

A Great Kids Philadelphia Book!
I thought this book was the best! It told me things about Philadelphia I didn't know before. One day Richard "Beast" and Best where going to school. When they came in they found out that they were going to Philadelphia on a field trip! They go off looking forward to seeing many different things in the city. If this sounds good, you have to read Let's Go, Philidelphia! If you thought you would like to visit Philadelphia, at the end of the book there is a kids' guide.

Montessori in the Classroom: A Teacher's Account of How Children Really Learn
Published in Paperback by Schocken Books (August, 1997)
Author: Paula Polk Lillard
Average review score:

Only one word needed : Inspirational !
Having taught for a number of years in a Montessori environment, this book was like a breath of fresh air. From the first page I was hooked, understanding all. The book gave my staff and I may wonderful ideas for our classrooms, and made us really focus in on the importance of the Montessori method again. The best book to give to new staff members, Directresses or assistants; parents. So inspirational at a time when we were in a rut. Thank-you Paula for writing such a vailable book.

anyone in the education field should read this!
A diary account of the day by day occurances in a Montessori classroom. What is truely fascinating is the way this teacher closely observes the children and know when (and when not) to help and give assistance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is confused about how the Montessori classroom operates. It is very informative and gives you an insider's viewpoint on the Montessori method of education.

Real-World Insights Offered in an Understandable Manner
As someone who has gone through medical training, I can say that every shrewd pre-med and med student should devour this book. It is filled with information about how the business and practice of medicine REALLY work in the U.S. You won't hear your med school professors talking about this...at least, not around students.

This book might cause the shrewd pre-med student to choose another career. So be it. It will also help him/her choose the right path within medicine, should he/she decide to stay. One of the most useful books I have EVER read in my life.

outstanding
An eye-opening look at medicine beyond the ivory tower that most med students are familiar with. You may or may not agree with the author's cynicism but it is warranted in today's healthcare environment. Think of it as an unabridged version of "The House of God" as it deals with medical life before and after residency.

Every pre-med needs to read this book.
This book takes the reader from the first year of medical school through residency and private practice in an uncompromisingly frank manner. I bought this book as a 2nd-year med student and have found it to be 100% on target every step of the way. Even when I didn't follow its advice, I later wished I had.
